McConnell's Windmill

This windmill, circa 1825 and located in Chapman Park in the Village of Morristown, was built by Hugh McConnell, a miller from Scotland. After Mr. McConnell drowned in 1826 the mill was abandoned. Through the 1800's it served as a local jail and during World War II it was operated as an Air Warning Post. After the war it served briefly as the American Legion Club House. The Chapman family donated the land to the Village. This windmill, the only such structure in the area on the American side of the river, is one of seven Morristown structures listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Tibbetts Point Lighthouse

The Tibbetts Point Lighthouse stands at the entrance from Lake Ontario into the St. Lawrence River and is still an active light maintained by the Coast Guard. The original tower, built in 1827, was fueled by whale oil and remained in service until 1854 when the present tower was built. The conical tower is 69 feet of white stucco which once contained a 50 candlepower oil lamp of fixed beam. It was equipped with a fourth order Fresnel lens.
In 1896 a steam operated fog whistle was added. It was later replaced, in 1927,by an air diaphone which ran on an automatic timer. Later the whistle and air diaphonewere replaced by a radio beacon to guide the ships.
The lighthouse tower, signal building, a brick building housing the air compressors built in 1927 and an iron oil house, conspires this historic complex. The complex had been a U. S. Coast Guard Station until 1981. Now the Keeper's residence is an American Youth Hostel. This lighthouse has the only classical Fresnel lens still in operation on Lake Ontario. The Visitors Center and Lighthouse Museum are open from Memorial Day through September, on weekends and daily during July and August. The Hostel is open May 15 through October 15.
